Kevin Ayers (1974 – 1978)

Alumnus, Kevin Ayers

To continue with our series of alumni articles, we will be sharing stories of ex students that are now staff at the academy! We begin with Mr Kevin Ayers, former Custodian and member of our Premises Team.

Kevin started at The Denes Comprehensive High School in September 1974. He was very sports-orientated and excelled in this area. He was the rugby team captain and also played for the Colts football team. Kevin was very successful in the sporting field and was awarded ‘full colours’ for his achievements and effort in both teams.

Kevin recalled his old PE Teacher, Dan Maddocks, telling us Mr Maddocks was very well-respected and a bit of a disciplinarian. Kevin enjoyed being taught by him, and the values he learned have stayed with him.

In those days, ‘colours’ were awarded as rewards – these were strips of fabric which were sewn onto the students’ blazers. In this instance, Kevin’s colour was black, embroidered with the words: Denes High Rugby FC. Kevin also had similar colours for his football achievements. Kevin said: “I was awarded my full colours for the rugby XV and the soccer XI. The full colours were reflected on the reverse of the school tie.”

During the following two years, Kevin played for the Denes’ First XI in soccer and the First XV in rugby. Now for the exciting bit! Terry Butcher also played in the First XI soccer team. Terry Butcher, as you may be aware, played football for Ipswich Town FC, and is a renowned international player, having played in most senior English international games. Kevin said: “Terry left our school and went on to have a very successful career in professional football, captaining my beloved Ipswich Town, also captaining and winning 77 full caps for his country.”

Kevin added: “It was a long time ago but I can remember vaguely winning all our games that season and only conceding one goal. It was a good team. Although I did gain various CSEs (Certificates of Secondary Education), I was more inspired by sport and thoroughly enjoyed my time at The Denes.”

Kevin left school in 1978 and went to Lowestoft College. He was later employed with a local building company as a carpenter and joiner apprentice. He qualified in 1979 when he gained his City & Guilds Certificate for Carpentry & Joinery.

Our thanks and best wishes go to Kevin.
