Excellence in Mathematics

Mathematics at Ormiston Denes Academy prepares students for a successful future regardless of their chosen career path. Students are expected to leave the academy, not just with excellent grades in the subject, but the ability to think creatively, act independently, and with the perseverance and resilience required to solve problems. These attributes are developed through our commitment to specialist teaching, a well-structured curriculum, and appropriate support for all students.

Teaching is aimed at developing a strong conceptual understanding of the underpinning principles of mathematics. These principles are then built upon through the consolidation of key topics, with constant extension for the students that require it. We aim to build confidence and enjoyment of the subject for future learning, whilst providing constant challenge that will stretch even the sharpest minds. To ensure students are able to link their studies to the real world, all topics are connected with additional material designed to broaden interest and demonstrate applied mathematics in real life.

In addition to regular formative assessment and feedback within lessons, students are formally assessed throughout the term. The feedback from these assessments forms a personalised plan for improvement moving forwards. This is done with a range of independent resources made available for the students. Where students need support, or require additional challenge, both interventions and additional classes are provided where appropriate.

As members of the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust we regularly enter competitions at a local and national level. Our Year 7s and 8s boast a gold medal win in recent years and continue to strive to match this exceptional performance.

We maintain high expectations at all times, ensuring that every minute counts, encouraging all students to understand both their full potential and shape their aspirations moving forward into their lives after Ormiston Denes Academy.
