The pace of technological change is accelerating. Every year we get new and more exciting discoveries from SpaceX to gene editing. The Science Department at Ormiston Denes Academy looks to prepare students to understand the changes they will see over their lifetime. We also look to create lifelong learners by carefully developing students’ scientific numeracy and literacy.
The Science Department is based in a suite of eight fully equipped laboratories, a preparation room and staff work room. Science lessons are taught by eight specialist teachers, with the support of three technicians and a science support teacher. The team works collaboratively and actively to develop teaching and resources.
The objective of the Science Department is to provide students with a high quality education which will help prepare them for life in the 21st Century. We want our students to understand the scientific ideas that have come before and be ready for the developments in the field that are still to come.
We deliver the key stage 3 programme of study using the Activate resources from Oxford University Press. All students have access to digital texts and other resources via their Kerboodle logins which are issued during the first weeks of the autumn term. Students are assessed through regular mini tests and longer written answers. Termly tests are also carried out in class. Support with Science homework is available during Friday lunch times in S5.
Students’ ideas and understanding gained in years 7 and 8 are further developed by being taught all three separate sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This is done by following the Oxford University press curriculum to ensure a smooth transition. All students have access to digital texts and other resources via their Kerboodle logins which are issued during the first weeks of the autumn term. Students are assessed through regular mini tests and longer written answers. Termly tests are also carried out in class. Support with homework is available during Friday lunch times in S5.
