Attendance

Attendance at School

For any student to achieve their best and learn to their full potential it is essential that they have excellent attendance.

Full attendance (100%) is the standard expected. Attendance figures will be reported to parents/carers termly with good attendance being recognised appropriately. The Student Services Officer will follow up instances of prolonged and/or frequent absence.  80% attendance may sound reasonable but it actually means a 4 day week!

If your son/daughter is unable to come to school, please:

  • Telephone the academy (01502 574474) as early as possible on the first day of absence and either ask for the attendance office or select the student absence option from the automated menu
  • Ask for work if absence is going to be prolonged

Please note that if we don’t hear from you on the day of absence, truancy call will automatically phone you.

Absence from school can only be authorised for the following reasons:

  • Illness
  • Medical or dental appointments
  • Religious observance
  • Bereavement of a member of the close family
  • Annual family holiday *

* The school now operates a ‘Penalty Notice’ system, whereby any student absent from school for 6 sessions (3 days) can be referred to the Local Authority for a penalty notice (this includes holidays during school time). Please contact the school attendance officer for further details.

Lateness

Punctuality is an important part of self-discipline and is essential to good time management.

Students must be in registration by 8.50am.  A warning bell will be sounded at 8.45am, students should be on site at this time. Students who arrive between 8.55am – 9.05am  will be met at the academy gate by the Attendance Officers who will sign them in and if necessary give them a 15 minute late detention to be carried out at 3.10pm that day. If students arrive after 9.05am they will be given a 30-minute detention to be carried out at 3.10pm that day. If students do not attend, it will escalate to a 45 minute house detention.

The academy also operates a ‘Penalty Notice’ system, whereby a student who is late 6 times in a single academic year, can be referred to the Local Authority for a penalty notice. Please contact the academy Attendance Officer for further details.

Signing Out

Medical and dental appointments should be made outside of school hours. If students must leave school during the day, for any reason, they need a note from their parent/carer in advance of the date. Students must sign out at the student office where they will receive a ‘Pass out Slip’. They must sign in again if they return to school on the same day.

Under no circumstances may a student leave school or go home without permission.
