Platinum Award from Suffolk Young Carers

We are proud to announce that in January we were awarded our platinum award from our work with Suffolk Family Carers and supporting our young carers in school.

We work closely with Suffolk Family Carers, and especially those within our academy. We have raised school awareness of young carers through assemblies, form time sessions, social media, internal information boards, and staff training.

We have a number of young people in school who are young carers, and we support them in many different ways. Meetings in school are arranged to allow students to work with the Young Carer Adviser, Rachel Maidstone, from Suffolk Family Carers, arrangements can be made for extended homework deadline if necessary, and students can contact home during the course of the school day if they need to check on a family member that they care for.

We also have regular drop in sessions for young carers and their friends that are not young carers, so they can find out more about young carers. This is a time to relax, socialise, chat, play games and eat together in a quiet environment.

Further information regarding young carers can be found on the pastoral section of our website at http://www.ormistondenes.co.uk/pastoral/young-carers/

If you would like to have any further information regarding our support for young carers at Ormiston Denes Academy, please contact Julie Mayo.
